Hurricane Hazel, One Family’s Story

This historical fiction concerns the hurricane that hit Toronto, Ontario in 1954. It stalled over Etobicoke, the western part of the city, killing 81 people across the province of Ontario. Houses and streets went into the Humber River and Lake Ontario, along with the residents inside.

The family in the story is fictional but the facts are historic. Through these characters the reader can experience that horrific night, and understand why floodplain must be protected, and why the future development of lands must exclude the floodplain, agricultural land, and wetlands. Climate change is making the impact of flood events even greater.
